A birth doula is defined as a professional support person trained in the needs of the mother and family during pregnancy and childbirth. The doula offers non-judgmental support, guidance, evidence based education and practical hands-on support during childbirth including comfort measures. Doula originates from the Greek word meaning woman servant. A birth doula recognizes the profound impact of childbirth on the mother.

Each birth doula listed on the page has gone through certification to become a birth or labor doula. To be a birth doula vendor at Novant each had to go through an extensive credentialing process including, drug tests, background checks, vaccinations, blood borne pathogen training as well as providing their birth doula certifications. As a doula they are able to be with you throughout your labor including in triage, and in recovery if a c-section is needed.
